Dublin IP and R&D Summit
Dublin IP and R&D Summit stands as an intellectual property-focused conference orchestrated by Cosmonauts. It convenes annually in Dublin and constitutes an integral element of a wider IP series, complemented by its counterpart, London IP Week. My role encompassed a comprehensive rebranding endeavor for the conference, coupled with the creation of an array of assets. This portfolio encompassed diverse elements including the development of the conference website, the crafting of compelling posters and roll-up banners, the curation of impactful social media imagery to bolster marketing endeavors, and the creation of an extensive array of supplementary materials.
THE CHALLENGE: Upon my introduction to the project, the event brand had been devised on an ad hoc basis due to the absence of an in-house designer during its inception. This initial approach resulted in a brand identity that exhibited a stark lack of sophistication and distinctive character. Furthermore, the absence of any printed deliverables, apart from the event brochure, compounded the challenge. Upon being entrusted with the rebranding of Dublin IP and R&D Summit, a crucial directive was to ensure harmonious cohesiveness between this event and London IP Week, even though they were distinct occurrences. I assumed stewardship of the project approximately one month after joining Cosmonauts. However, the fluid circumstances resulting from the COVID pandemic necessitated multiple postponements of the conference, thereby affording me the opportunity to continually refine and adapt my design concept over the course of ensuing years.
DESIGN: My design journey commenced with a focus on the event's logo. Leveraging the interplay of negative space within the acronym "DIPS," I integrated a light bulb icon. This innovative approach not only encapsulated the concept of ideas and IP but also presented a unifying visual thread that seamlessly connected with the London IP Week logo, establishing a cohesive identity for the series. Crafting a harmonious color palette was the subsequent step. A deep, dark blue was chosen as the backdrop, evoking a sense of gravitas, while a lighter blue was selected to infuse accents that conveyed a dynamic energy.
When it came to incorporating graphic elements into the design, I navigated the unique challenge posed by the intellectual property domain. Creativity within this realm is constrained, particularly given the pre-existing light bulb motif within the logo. This meant I had to explore avenues closely tied to the concepts of protection and ideas, while ensuring seamless applicability to both Dublin IP and R&D Summit and London IP Week.
The conceptual genesis of the "wave" was born from these considerations. I harnessed geometric shapes to signify connections, the fluidity of interactions, the exchange of ideas, and the intricate networking that characterizes conferences like Dublin IP and R&D Summit. This graphic element not only amplified the design's visual appeal but also encapsulated the essence of the event itself.
